The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.
The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
